The Road to Movie Business

14.09.2008

The Road to Movie BusinessVadim Goryainov, Krasnaya Strela, producer

Up to the time I left the publishing house Prof-Media I had worked at that company for 8 years, made several successful deals and possessed all the necessary attributes for starting my own business: experience, market knowledge, reputation, money. I understood that an executive’s job and an entrepreneur’s job are close to each other, but at the same time they have at least one significant difference. While a manager may react only to outside “signals”, which are usually stockholders’ requirements; a businessman should change the reality himself. He must be a creator or he has got no chances to succeed.

When I realized that I was ready to make this step, I defined a set of compulsory criteria for my future business. These criteria were: good possibilities for growth; potentially high dynamics of development in the nearest years; international potential; and my own interest meaning that this business had to be concerned with media. The movie business met all these requirements.

The choice had been made, but I had to learn a lot because I hardly know anything about my chosen business. I met with all my friends who were connected to movie and shared my ideas with them. So I talked and I learned. I became acquainted with Sergey Chliyantz who at that time was already a famous and successful film producer. Together we had made some good projects including the bestseller Casual by Oxana Robski and the movie Alive.

Finally I told my good friend actor Leonid Yarmolnik that I wanted to further immerse myself in movie industry. And he said to me: “Great! Here someone normal has come into the movie business at last! You have to meet Todorovsky, because I’m sure you will work well together!”, and introduced me to Valery Todorovsky, producer and film director. We started a very big $13 million project. It is a real musical about fops of the 1950s with a working name Bugi on the Bones. The preparatory period took two years, and now there is already shooting.

While working on this film Valery and me understood that we could work together not only on an independent project, but as business partners as well. So the company Krasnaya Strela (“Red Arrow”) has arisen. The company’s name is symbolic, because we believe that the main Russian movie “forces” are concentrated in Moscow and St.-Petersburg. (The matter is “Red Arrow” is a name of the famous train running between two Russian capitals). In the two years that has passed since its foundation, our company has become one of the market leaders, has launched two motion pictures and three more are coming soon. And I haven’t regretted a single day about my choice of the movie business. Prepared by Ekaterina Zakomurnaya
